What is Answer Engine Optimization for law firms?
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), also called Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), is the practice of making a law firm the one an AI system names when a person asks it for a lawyer. Where search engine optimization aims to rank a page in a list of links, AEO aims to be included in a single generated answer, which typically names a small number of firms and provides no second page. It is done by publishing content an answer engine can quote, credentials it can verify, and third-party mentions it can trust.
What changed
For twenty years a prospective client typed a query and received ten links. They compared, clicked, and chose. A firm could be fourth on that page and still win the client.
An answer engine does not return a list. It returns an answer, and when the question is which lawyer to call, the answer names a few firms and stops. There is no fourth position. A firm is either in the answer or it does not exist for that client.
The engines doing this include ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot. They differ in detail but select sources in broadly similar ways.
What an answer engine checks before it names a firm
An answer engine is trying to avoid being wrong. Recommending a lawyer who does not practice in that area, or in that city, or at all, is a visible failure. So before it names a firm it looks for evidence on three fronts.
- Content it can quote. A specific, plainly written answer to the question being asked, on a page the engine can read. Generic practice pages built from the same template as ten thousand others give it nothing to extract.
- Identity it can verify. The attorney's name connected to a bar number, a jurisdiction, a practice area, and a location, in structured data and on third-party sites that agree with each other.
- Trust it did not have to take your word for. Directory listings, publications, profiles, and mentions on sites the engine already relies on. What others say about a firm weighs more than what the firm says about itself.
What AEO is not
It is not a way to buy placement. None of the answer engines sell inclusion in a generated answer, and no agency can purchase it on your behalf.
It is not a guarantee. The platforms control their own output, change their systems without notice, and produce different answers to the same question on different days. Any agency promising a specific result is guessing.
It is not a replacement for a reputation. AEO makes an existing, verifiable track record legible to a machine. It does not manufacture one, and attempting to would violate both the engines' policies and most state bar advertising rules.
How it is measured
The honest metric is simple: for a fixed set of real client questions in a firm's market, is the firm named, is the practice area and location correct, and is the firm's own site cited as a source. Asked the same way every month, that produces a trend a partner can read without a dashboard.
We publish our method in full so a firm can check it rather than trust it. See How AI chooses which lawyers to name.
Questions
Is AEO the same as GEO or LLMO?+
Functionally, yes. Generative Engine Optimization and Large Language Model Optimization describe the same work from slightly different angles. The terms are young and used loosely. What matters is the practice: being the source an AI system names and cites.
Does AEO work for a small firm?+
Often better than for a large one. Answer engines weight specificity and verifiability over size. A three-attorney firm with clear credentials and genuinely useful answers to the questions its clients ask is frequently named ahead of a large firm whose site says little an engine can quote.
How long does it take?+
We will not quote a date, because the platforms control the outcome. What we commit to is measurement from the first month, so a firm sees movement or the absence of it on a fixed cadence rather than waiting on a promise.
